SRC-2018-0012 : Foxit Reader PDF Parsing U3D Heap-based Buffer Overflow Remote Code Execution Vulnerability
Foxit Reader and Foxit PhantomPDF
This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable installations of Foxit Reader. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file.
The specific flaw exists within the parsing of embedded U3D images inside of PDF files. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of the length of user-supplied data prior to copying it to a fixed-length, heap-based buffer. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code under the context of the current process.
Foxit has issued an update to correct these vulnerabilities. More details can be found at:
- 2018-01-25 – Verified and sent to Foxit
- 2018-04-27 – Coordinated public release of advisory
